SharePoint 2016

SharePoint 2016

It has arrived, and we like what we see!

With an official release date of March 14th 2016, SharePoint 2016 is the latest and greatest in terms of on-premise productivity from Microsoft. Coupled with Office Online Server (formally ‘Office Web Apps Server’), SharePoint 2016 brings the on-premises versions of Microsoft’s flagship product up-to-speed with its ‘evergreen’ and always new cousin – SharePoint Online (part of Office 365).

Don’t worry though. Even though SharePoint 2016 is very new to the public, we at The Solution Collective have been playing with the IT Preview version since it was released in August 2015. And we like what we see.

What is new in SharePoint 2016?

SharePoint 2016 isn’t so much a complete revamp, but more of the continuation of a journey that started with SharePoint 2010, and continued with SharePoint 2013. With much of the core platform remaining similar or the same, SharePoint 2016 really just starts to fill in some of those obvious gaps (like durable links, or document discussions), and improve on stability and supportability (MinRole farm topology, and improved hybrid support).
A full list of new SharePoint 2016 features is available on the Microsoft website, but a selection of our favourites are given below:

Feature Why it is awesome
Hybrid SharePoint farms Hybrid in SharePoint Server 2016 enables you to integrate your on-premises farm with Office 365 productivity experiences, allowing you to adopt the cloud at your own pace.
Durable links Allows documents to be moved around SharePoint or be renamed, but still be referenced by the same ID number. The coolest manifestation of Durable Links is that the URL referencing a document will always stay the same (and it will be shorter than the previous URLs presented by SharePoint, which in some cases could exceed 255 characters)
Document discussions Finally a ‘social’ feature that really works in a business context! Document Discussions takes the ability to collaborate simultaneously on a Word, Excel or other Office documents (a feature that we know and love from SharePoint 2013 / SharePoint Online), and turns the dial up to 11!Document discussions allows people to discuss any aspect of a collaborative document inside the document. Really awesome stuff, that enhances productivity no end.
MinRole farm topology The role of a server is specified when you create a new farm or join a server to an existing farm. SharePoint automatically configures the services on each server based on the server role, optimizing the performance of the farm based on that topology. There are five main predefined server roles that are available: Front End, Application, Distributed Cache, Search, and Custom
